Pete
I do not know if this is your problem or not, but I own the same
Adaptec SATA card as you and learnt that there is a flaw in the
controller chip on these cards. The flaw causes the controller to
become flaky with high capacity SATA hard disks, >160GB. I don't know
if you are attaching a >160GB drive to the controller, but if you are,
then the computer system will either not see the hard disk at all, or
in some cases it will see it for a time, but then over a day or two,
the ability to read/write from that drive will degrade and eventually
crash the system. I believe the flaw is a physical one inside the
controller chip(s), and not a driver fault, so I am not sure if it can
be fixed.
I had nothing but grief with both a 200GB Seagate and a 250GB WD SATA
drive attached, I swapped them out with a 120GB drive, and all is sweet
with the card.
I have been running like this for about 3 months now, so I have not
bothered to try and find a fix (if there even is one) There is a bit
of information about it that can be searched within Google Groups, as
well as the Adaptec website.
I purchased the Adaptec branded controller card because of the good
name of Adaptec, but I have been sadly dissapointed by it.
