Repair install of XP pro

A system I recently built SHOULD be much faster than it is. AMD 64 bit 2800
with a Gig of micron ram, WD Sata drives.
I have this strange feeling that my installation of XP got bunged up
somehow, thought not sure how to check.
Someone suggested that I do a repair install.
Can some explain exactly what this will do?
I have ALL updates except SP2( could that be an issue with the 64 bit
processor?)
Does the repair install only go forward if there are errors to be repaired?
What happens to the updates?

Thanks !
