There is a couple of things here it may connect at 33 but does it stay
at that? Often modems connect slow and build up the speed.

The second thing is QOS setting which can keep some of the bandwidth
for its self.

Increase BROADBAND:

this ones simple:
this is for broad band connections. I didn’t try it on dial up but
might work for dial up.
1.make sure your logged on as actually "Administrator". do not log on
with any account that just has administrator privileges.
2. start - run - type gpedit.msc
3. expand the "local computer policy" branch
4. expand the "administrative templates" branch
5. expand the "network branch"
6. Highlight the "QoS Packet Scheduler" in left window
7. in right window double click the "limit reservable bandwidth"
setting
8. on setting tab check the "enabled" item
9. where it says "Bandwidth limit %" change it to read 0
reboot if you want to but not necessary on some systems your all done.
Effect is immediate on some systems. some need re-boot. I have one
machine that needs to reboot first, the others didn't. Don't know why
this is.

This is more of a "counter what XP does" thing. In other words, XP
seems to want to reserve 20% of the bandwidth for its self. Even with
QoS disabled, even when this item is disabled. So why not use it to
your advantage. To demonstrate the problem with this on stand alone
machines start up a big download from a server with an FTP client. Try
to find a server that doesn't max out your bandwidth. In this case you
want a slow to medium speed server to demonstrate this. Let it run for
a couple of minutes to get stable. The start up another download from
the same server with another instance of your FTP client. You will
notice that the available bandwidth is now being fought over and one
of the clients download will be very slow or both will slow down when
they should both be using the available bandwidth. Using this "tweak"
both clients will have a fair share of the bandwidth and will not
fight over the bandwidth.

Another thing is if you are using a lot of internet software ie
windows update, AV update etc you could be exeeding the new tcip limit
you will get a error in the event log 4226 get the fix from
http://www.janwright.co.uk/tcip.zip

The last thing is you MTU is set wrong this would do it

Get a setting tool from

http://www.dslreports.com/drtcp there is plenty of info on MTU on the
net its often set on broadband but it can cause problem on dial up

It's 150% sure that sp2 did it. Booting into linux and connecting gives me normal connection speeds..
Today i found out 3 of my friends had the same problem and since they didnt find a solution they removed sp2. Then, i tried installing sp2 on 2 laptops - mine and moms, and the same thing happened. I removed the sp2. Except on my comp.. I need it because i got Visual Studio 2005 which i really want to use (requires sp2).. Oh yeah.. i installed the latest driver from Conexant.. no efect..

Its really annoyng. Browsing the web I just found more people seeking solutions without any results... I give it a week before i stop seeking a way to solve this and revert to sp1 and Visual studio 2003.. bah... Microsoft...

Are you sure this is caused by SP2.....

I know it might have happened after installing SP2 this but this might be coincidence...... mybe your phone company has done something to the line

Can you try installing the modem on another machine (that does not have SP2)

Hi.

Does anyone know how to fix the slow down to 33600 bug after SP2 installation? Without uninstalling the sp2 'course?

Thanx,
Sveb.

Well.. i tried it all.. nothing worked.. So, irritated as i was i started uninstalling sp2. And guess what.. VS 2005 still works as if nothing happened.. I really hate when someone pushes me around.. and thats what theyre doing by forcing me to upgrade to sp2 when it's actually not needed for anything.. So it was possible for Microsoft to piss me off more.. ***.. i hate them. Oh yeah.. modem speed is back to normal.. Piss off bill..
