Problem with explorer.exe

My problem is that the computer is hanging up when I sometimes want to
open a directory in the EXPLORER:

c:\correspondance\general

Under all office programs I'm able to search this sub-directory
without any problems. After running a virus checker on the HD the
problem will disapear for some time and come back.

Is there anybody on this list who could help me to find a solution to
solve this problem?
