@newssvr22.news.prodigy.net:
Take a look see at Specialized Rockhopper - about $500.
okay, so i'm back and close to a decision.
originally, i was going to go with the Trek 4300, but the local shop has
almost convinced me to spend the extra ~$120 for something that I can
grow into as I get more adventursome on my trails... and although the
4300 was very nice compared to the bike i've been borrowing, i hated the
shifters and brake handles (back of handles are unfinished, and i kept
dragging my knuckles across sharp edge when i went to shift.
The LBS highly recommended i step up to the Gary Fisher Marlin - they
let me ride both a bit and I LOVED the Marlin.
So, once more I return for advice! - Marlin or Rockhopper, which would
be the better buy? I haven't ridden the rockhopper, but a local shop has
one and it's about $20 more than the Marlin.
Considering I started wanting to spend about $150 for a bike, this is a
huge jump.
As a side note, as an old road biker from way back, i made the mistake
of looking at an Orbea Vuelta while I was there. I could weep i loved
it so much. it's WAY more money than i want to spend, and i don't want
to be road biking around Charlotte, but my gosh it made me wistful. I'm
thinking this year and next MTB'ing, but pick up a good road bike for
weekend rides next spring... ahhhh.
Thanks all in advance, except the one guy who flamed a replier for their
choice of the Pirahanna.
