Always a helmet, always. I have cracked one without even hurting my

Riding more often improves skill at preventing accidents, so long as
you dont start to ride over your head.
SixSixOne has mesh shorts padded all around to protect hips &
tailbone for about $45; i got these after sliding down hard on icy
offcanter trail last fall because it hurt that side bone so bad. The
mesh keeps these from being too hot. They really dont look that bad
either, you can wear them under baggies or over tight shorts. I
havent hit that spot before or since, but a hip injury can have
lasting effects that you do not want as you get older.
I also use soft foam soccer shin pads; they get hot & sometimes
rotate on my leg (because I cut off the strap that goes under the
foot), but they do the job. A lot of people (who arent wearing them)
ask me about them, so I guess they look acceptable enough (mine are
white with mud stains) & fulfill a common need.
Wrecked on a log & while I was sliding on the ground & the bike went
up in the air & then down on the side of my leg just above the ankle,
for a severe soft tissue injury. My shinguards werent much help for
that; but Ive seen ankle protectors for about $29 I may get. More
because I often bang my inside ankle against the bike in rough
sections.
I used hard plastic knee & elbow pads when roller-blading, but found
them uncomfortable & wont stay in place for biking.
Flipped over & crunched my back real bad a couple of years ago; kept
me off the bike for about 5 weeks. Got the cheapest, thin sixsixone
chest protector & dont like it. Shoulders stick out & looks like
starwars or football uniform. Its really made just to protect from
flying debris anyway. So I dont use it. But I guess it might help
keep from being impaled or hurting the ribs too bad. I did wear it
in the winter under heavier clothes.
I always wear eye protection, & I still get mud in my eyes.
Got a bad spider bite soon after I first started riding. Putting
some OFF on your socks can help protect against this & deer ticks &
mosquitos, which are really some of our biggest threats in the woods.
Ive even run into bugs while breathing hard & hurt the inside of my
mouth.
There's too many ways to get hurt to protect against them all, so
just use what your'e comfortable with, enjoy, ride within yourself &
the Lord's will will be done.
I'm really interested in other's experiences and opinions, and any
suggestions.
Thanks for a lot of tips. I guess I will start seeking a balance
between comfort and protection, and what I can safely ride with
acceptable risk. I'm sure not going riding looking like a goal tender
at a hockey game, but I will try under garment chest protection. I may
try modest knee, elbow, and hip protection too.
One limitation here is that typical 3 season weather my exceed 100
degrees midday. I don't want to protect my bones but die of heat
exposure because of it!
