Coldstone is a good replacement, although a lot more expensive.
A yuppy foo-foo ice cream spa compared to a good old-fashioned mega-sized ice cream parlor? I think not.

*Sigh* But it's all we've got now or Mr Softee. We used to have a Farrells like place here called Richmonds. Probably the last dairy owned ice cream parlor in NJ. They dozed it to build Cherry Hill's new municipal building. Before that was the Cow Tail Barn in Voorhees. A real dairy (the cows were right out front) with homemade fresh ice cream. Then Voorhees decided they wanted McMansions instead of farms, so that was torn down.
You gotta have a 50s style diner around with chocolate sodas, malts, shakes, sundaes, and banana splits? We're grateful we do with the Rocky Cola Cafe here in town.

:(
Jersey used to be the diner capital of the world. Over the past 15 years, they have taken them apart, but them on trucks, and shipped them to the midwest. Really, it's true. They are gone. The ones that are left, are just shells of what they used to be and if you want ice cream just serve up some ice crystalized Breyers that has been sitting in the freezer for weeks.
I know ice cream pretty well having worked for the top ingredients suppliers (emulsifiers and stabilizers) to dairy producers. We used to taste test all day long :). The last true ice cream social places are in Lancaster, PA (Amish Country). Quite a drive for me.
I guess Johnny Rockets has that 50's type stuff, but they are such a trendy chain and I can't stand when they break into dance.
If the restaurant business wasn't such a PIA 18 hour a day job, I'd open a place up. Sort of like a Mel's Drive-in / Diner type deal. People around here really don't care for the ambiance as long as the food is trendy. Sounds ridiculous but when they opened the P.F. Changs here two years ago, people were waiting two and a half hours for Chinese food! They still wait! In two months we are getting our first Cheesecake Factory. Gee another trendy place to eat (5 years ago) that you can wait two hours to get a seat. It's all about the novelty.
