A message from President, and Editor of The National CFIDS Foundation Organization (NCF)
There has been much misinformation on the internet and these distortions of truth have a way of spreading. Here are just a few facts based upon factual history and indisputable science:
1. Thousands of patients in the United States have been diagnosed with myalgic encephalomyelits (ME) both before and after our Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) invented the name of chronic fatigue syndrome in 1988. It was only just before the CDC came out their new and much criticized "Empirical Definition" in 2005 that ME was removed from the CDC's diagnostic code listings. Despite the removal of ME, patients have continued to suffer and some, unfortunately, have been added to the National CFIDS Foundation's Memorial List.
2. The National CFIDS Foundation prefers to go by fully replicated science that has become proven fact. The NCF has never claimed that the toxin known as ciguatera was causative of CFIDS/ME. The NCF has continued to fund researchers at the John A. Burns School of Medicine since 2002 and the NIH also funded them for a $1 million grant based upon the results of our initial funding. To date. over 1,000 patients worldwide have tested highly positive to the assay who were diagnosed with CFS or ME and we are still waiting to hear from one patient diagnosed who has tested negative.
3. In 2008, the assay for ciguatera, which is considered the "gold standard" by all marine biological centers in the U.S. and many other countries, was found to be a biomarker for all autoimmune diseases. Thus, indisputable and fully recognized science has proven that "CFS" is an autoimmune disease.. And, yes, the U.S. accepts scientific fact and has acknowledged this scientific fact (paper on our website at www.ncf-net.org).
4. Currently, the testing for ciguatera is still available to anyone worldwide although we are unable to say how much longer this availability will continue. This testing is not available via any commercial laboratories since the John A. Burns School of Medicine at the University of Hawaii owns the patent rights which were extended when the test was proven to be a biomarker for all autoimmune diseases. The protocol continues to be available via our website.
5. The word, "epitope" means "difference" and those patients found positive to ciguatera show a tiny difference in the molecular structure. The NCF is following up on this epitope (difference) in order to find the exact cause of CFIDS/ME.
6. Since decimation of Stat-1 has already been proven and fully replicated (K. de Mierleir, K. Knox, D. Carrigan), it is known that many damaging viruses and bacteria are opportunistic and are "linked to" CFIDS/ME. None have proven causative to date.
7. Yes, well over 99% of those of us at the NCF are patients and our main goal continues to be to be able to go out of existence having had the cause (and, hopefully a therapy to accompany it) proven. The NCF continues to put every available money toward funding for CFIDS/CFS/ME and not one penny is ever taken away from funding since we have no salaries or rent to pay.
