Here's what helped Kim Allsup, in 1996.
**** Begin quote****
What is needed to turn pyruvic acid into energy? One thing is
thiamine, vitamin B1. The amino acid which "turns on" thiamine
is taurine. Taurine is depleted by certain antibiotics, is depressed
by estrogen (perhaps why more women get FM) ...
There is a group of studies out (spear headed by the University of California,
San Diego) that demonstrates why more women are diagnosed with FM than men.
First of all, men do not have tender points in the same places as women (they
are working on new tender point charts for men). Thus, they do not present pain
in expected ways.
Second, men tend to under report, due to the nature of their gender.
Third, doctors have this dumb idea that men don't get FM, so they never even
consider it in men. This is an education issue. This was the biggest issue
presented in the video that was posted here last summer. Many doctors don't
even believe in FM, so the doctors also under report and mis-diagnose.
That's it in a nutshell. It's 2008 and we do know a lot more than we did in
1996.
