Re: Michael B -- Poor sleep? Looking for help?

Here's what helped Kim Allsup, in 1996.
**** Begin quote****
No, arginine does not make me drowsy. However I think it makes
me a bit more relaxed. It is a precursor to nitric oxide which helps
to relax arterial walls. (Note: if you are prone to herpes in any
form
it is important to balance arginine with lysine.)

Growth hormone is secreted during deep sleep and the longest
period of deep sleep occurs about an hour and a half or two
hours after falling asleep. This is the part of your sleep life that
needs the most protection. ( This means Woe unto those who
have teenagers who come home after you go to bed!)

In addition to the vitamins and amino acids which I take, I also
protect this period of sleep with careful eating. People who have
FM have higher levels of pyruvic acid in their blood. Pyruvic acid
is a metabolic step between blood sugar and energy. It can also
be turned back into blood sugar. How does this relate to sleep?
One cannot go into deep sleep if there is too much insulin in the
system. I eat a low carbo high protein dinner early in the evening
and no calories after 6 PM. This gives my system extra time to
process blood sugar into energy and to lower insulin levels.
Someone who has low blood sugar and who wanted to try this
could get up 4 or 5 hours after bedtime for a small snack. This
would protect the key deep sleep time of two hours into sleep.

I am hoping more people will experiment with food and see how
it affects their sleep. Eat candy before bed and see how you
sleep. Fast after 6 PM and see how you sleep. Eat low carbo all
day and see how you sleep. Let us all know what happens.

I know the minute I wake up if I have slept deeply. First, I don't
remember dreams and I have no sense of time. (Before, when I
was really sick I slept so lightly that I could accurately guess
the time all night long if I woke up.)
My other interesting measurement is inside my mouth. Like
many others with FM, I tend to get rough patches inside my
cheeks. These heal and become smooth overnight if I sleep
deeply. I presume this has something to do with growth hormone
which is released during deep sleep.

What is needed to turn pyruvic acid into energy? One thing is
thiamine, vitamin B1. The amino acid which "turns on" thiamine
is taurine. Taurine is depleted by certain antibiotics, is depressed
by estrogen (perhaps why more women get FM) and takes many
months to build up if you have levels that are too low. I take 500
mg
of taurine three times per day. I also take about 100 mg of most
B vitamins and a bit more than that of B1. I also take 1500 mg of
arginine before bed and 1000 mg carnitine am and pm. Magnesium
(400mg) vit c (3G) vit e (400 iu) are also on my list along with a
potent multivitamin.

I was doing all of this with the exception of the taurine and the
L Carnitine last year. I added the taurine mid summer. All of a
sudden (after about a week on it) I became a LOT stronger. I began
adding sprints to my running program, I couldn't believe my sudden
energy in swimming. I found myself crying in happiness as I was
exercising! I still woke up with morning pain for about a half an
hour.
This went away when I began the L Carnitine.

How did I become convinced that low carbo eating is a key to FM
management? I read the research by Eisinger about the high levels
of pyruvic acid. Then I read all I could about thiamine deficiency.
When researchers want to increase thiamine deficiency in
experimental rats they feed the rats a high carbo diet!
I looked at graphs that showed a direct relationship between
levels of pyruvic acid and levels of carbo fed. I started trying to
finish
my food for the evening early, to limit sugars and carbos. However,
one day we were travelling and our eating times were strange we
ended up eating sugared oatmeal at 10 PM and I woke up with one
of my worst flares ever.

I know we don't all have the same exact metabolism, but I believe
at least some of those with the poor sleep and muscle pain of FM
could be helped by the die and amino acids I use. Good luck and
please write to me at KAll...@xxxxxxx if you have questions or if
you experiment with any of this.
