Hi Robbster,
Depends who you talk to. Some would say they're actually the same
thing. But in my experience (one sis was Dx with CFS, myself, two
sisters and Mom were Dx with FMS) Fibromyalgia Syndrome is
characterized more by widespread pain, and CFS is characterized more
by tremendous fatigue. Fibromites can't sleep and CFSers sleep all
the time. But they have tons of overlappings symptoms.
The Merck Manual describes Fibromyalgia Syndrome like this:
LOL you must have missed one of my past post where I posted this and slammed
Merck for being wrong on things.
Mine is actually documented as two separate things CFS & FMS. I think I
could live with the FMS but it's the CFS that really kills me.
My friend Mark has pretty bad CFS and takes all sorts speed type meds to
get up and going. He has FMS too but says he only gets it twice a year at
most but it is so bad it puts him in the hospital for a week each time the
pain is so bad for him.
Want to know what a person with CFS looks like most of the time? Look at a
depressed person's face how they look all down and droopy. That is how we
look on days we are really weak.
CB
"Fibromyalgia is a common nonarticular disorder of unknown cause
characterized by achy pain, tenderness, and stiffness of muscles,
areas of tendon insertions, and adjacent soft tissues. Diagnosis is
clinical. Treatment includes exercise, local heat, and drugs for pain
and sleep."
and Chronic Fatigue Syndrome like this:
"Chronic fatigue syndrome is defined as long-standing, severe,
disabling fatigue without demonstrable muscle weakness. Underlying
disorders that could explain the fatigue are absent. Depression,
anxiety, and other psychologic diagnoses are typically absent.
Treatment is rest and psychologic support, often including
antidepressants."
Note that they start off FMS with the word pain and CFS with the word
fatigue.
There's a lot more to it than that, but this is the most basic
difference <IMO>.
Take GOOD Care,
Jane
