Re: FMS a Neurodegenerative Disorder?

Believe it or not, I have a fair notion of the use and abuse of
statistics.
Not only was the sample population small, there is a statistical skew
into the positive direction when looking for gray matter depletion.
And
the gold standard in structural MRI is still manually drawn region of
interest (ROI) analysis.
Along with several other concerns, the populations needed to be
matched for handedness, comorbid conditions, etc. Merely noting that
there were only 10 subjects is only a start at picking it apart. But
if
you do a search, you will find similar analyses for first episode
schizophrenia, bipolar, chronic fatigue, etc. So in the FMS group,
I would want to know if the person had coexistant CFS, bipolar, etc.

You didn't see me making a pronouncement with the thread. Matter
of fact, I put a question mark at the end because of my continued
concerns about the legitimacy of making such generalizations
without the voxel-based morphometry being standardized to this
level of analysis.
Main reason for bringing this one up, in spite of similar studies over
the last several years, was to show some indication of the kind of
studies that see the light of publication in peer-reviewed journals.
But ya know, if you want to discuss it with somebody, the person
to talk with, and her E-mail address, are at

And you can leave comments at the website, too. Several are
already there.

10. Ten. Any neurologist in this county of 20,000 souls can grab, at
random, 100 MRI brain scans done here and find 20 with reduced grey matter.
Of those twenty there will be a portion with chronic pain issues that are
not caused by FM. Those are the ones - however many they may be- that will
show non age-related degenerative changes.
What does this have to do with anything? Nothing. 10 in the test group
and 10 controls isn't statistically significant for anything, including -
but not limited to - the time of day.

Just in case anybody missed this from the WACOC posting for April
14th-
regarding evidence of considerably reduced gray matter in FMS'ers
brains.

In this study, we investigate anatomical changes in the brain
associated
with fibromyalgia. Using voxel-based morphometric analysis of magnetic
resonance brain images, we examined the brains of 10 female
fibromyalgia
patients and 10 healthy controls.
We found that fibromyalgia patients had significantly less total gray
matter volume and showed a 3.3 times greater age-associated decrease
in gray matter than healthy controls. The longer the individuals had
had
fibromyalgia, the greater the gray matter loss, with each year of
fibromyalgia being equivalent to 9.5 times the loss in normal aging.
In addition, fibromyalgia patients demonstrated significantly less
gray
matter density than healthy controls in several brain regions,
including the
cingulate, insular and medial frontal cortices, and parahippocampal
gyri.
The neuroanatomical changes that we see in fibromyalgia patients
contribute additional evidence of CNS involvement in fibromyalgia. In
particular, fibromyalgia appears to be associated with an acceleration
of
age-related changes in the very substance of the brain. Moreover, the
regions in which we demonstrate objective changes may be functionally
linked to core features of the disorder including affective
disturbances and
chronic widespread pain.
