afraid this is a bit overly simplistic - first off it would be a

now, with that as foundation, there is ample data showing that
transmission of the [thought to be precursor virus] siv from primates to
humans. see:

this is but one of many studies showing that humans do get various
primate virus infections, and it is postulated [strong structure
similarity, but not absolutely proven] that the genetic structure of hiv
is a mutation from one of the siv forms.
Dear Paul,
The Lancet article you are quoting discusses simian foamy virus, not
HIV.
Simian foamy virus has never been found to cause disease in humans.
See this report.
http://www.fda.gov/ohrms/dockets/AC/01/briefing/3817b1_11_nakhasi.htm
Similarly, there has never been a reported case of AIDS transmitted to
humans from chimps, gorillas or any other primates who have been a
natural reservoir for HIV for millions of years. In order to be a
zoonotic transmission of disease, there has to be a disease in the
recipient human. There has never been a documented case of AIDS
transmitted from a primate to hunters or zoo keepers. Nada. Zilch.
Nothing.
If you believe that the Foamy virus data indicates that HIV also has
been transmitted to humans from primates, then you must also conclude
that the foamy virus or the HIV would have been transmitted thousands
of years ago, and if you also believe that HIV causes AIDS in humans,
then we should have written historical records of the first cases
centuries ago, but we don't. The first cases were recorded in 1984 in
the San Francisco gay drug user community (coincidentally the same era
when the medical tests were developed to measure T cells and
antibodies)
Absence of first cases centuries ago indicates that AIDS is not caused
by the transmission from primates to humans.
For more information on why HIV is, in fact, not causative of the AIDS
syndrome in humans, and why this hypothesis is a 20 year medical
blunder perpetuated by huge amounts of money see:

Naturally acquired simian retrovirus infections in central African
hunters DrNathan D Wolfe ScD
Zoonotic infections with simian foamy virus (SFV), a retrovirus
endemic in most Old World primates, were identified in people living
in central African forests who reported direct contact with blood and
body fluids of wild non-human primates. Ten (1%) of 1099 individuals
had antibodies to SFV.
Interpretation
Our findings show that retroviruses are actively crossing into human
populations, and demonstrate that people in central Africa are
currently infected with SFV. Contact with non-human primates, such as
happens during hunting and butchering, can play a part in the
emergence of human retroviruses and the reduction of primate bushmeat
hunting has the potential to decrease the frequency of disease
emergence.
