Re: Nutrition and Fibromyalgia - longish

You know, my favorite chocolate is the dark stuff they call "Household" or
"Cooking" chocolate. It's the cheapest too! They also have some that is
70-80% cocoa. That's very dark and I think has less sugar.
mmmmmmmmmmmmmmm... I think it's been said that chocolate is an
antidepressant, but it has a lot of other stuff in it that's good for you.
However, NEVER give too much to your dog as the theobromine in chocolate can
be lethal to dogs.

Hi Robb, I agree with you on Janey's posts. She's a very gifted writer

I saw the movie "Fast Food Nation" recently and it was excellent, if
creepy.
It makes our world seem beyond salvation.

About food, I am so good about eating balanced and healthy meals. I'd say
it's easier to do here in Switzerland than in the US. Because over there
they have a lot of tempting things to eat and they have them everywhere
you
look.

Like Janey I do snack, but not on empty calories, rather on things like
cottage cheese, fruit, yogurt, healthy energy bars, etc. Oh and I do love
chocolate, I admit, but I am reasonable about how much I eat.

I get exercise too. Water aerobics and walking the dog. But in spite of
my
efforts I am still overweight. I just don't know what to do any more. It
makes me sad. It's unfair. I think it's genetic. So I guess I won't be
trying to "eat like a farmhand"!

Hi Katie,

Yes, unfortunately, people who also have an overweight problem need to
be careful when changing their food habits, and "eating like a
farmhand" just won't cut it. But you have to remember that farmhands
do more physical work in a day than the average 'normal' person, let
alone someone with fibromyalgia.

My weight fluctuates with the amount of energy I'm able to burn. A
few years ago, before I had my aneurysm, I was feeling well enough to
go out and get a full-time job. I was a bit overweight at the time -
let's say 10 lbs. at most. The only job available was Meat Manager at
the local big box grocery store. So I took it.

And I worked my tuckus off. I must've walked five miles a day, full-
tilt boogie, and lifted sometimes 2500 lbs. a day in hams, frozen
turkeys and whatnot. I lost 25 lbs. in six months and I actually felt
better physically than I had in a very long time.

But the exertion is part of what did me in - not because of my fibro,
but because of the strain on the blood flow in my brain. My aneurysm
was filling with blood and growing faster by the day, until the day I
realized I was having seizures and went to the doctor. Lo and Behold,
I had a Giant in my brain that could blow at any minute, and they
rushed me to the city in a two-hour drive by ambulance. Brain
surgery, uncontrolled temporal lobe seizures, seven medications . . .
and I haven't worked a day since that day - Jan. 19, 2005. And I've
put on 40 lbs.

We have to eat enough to have energy to burn - but we also have to do
enough to burn off what we've eaten. Right now, I'm not allowed to go
further than the end of the block without supervision (Just like a
five-year-old! LOL) because my seizures are uncontrolled and I've
been seizing without notice at least once every two weeks. So I can't
go swimming, I can't ride my bike, I can't go for long walks . . .
How then do I burn off what I need to take in for my body to feel
healthy?

A vicious circle.

However, for ME, it is more important that my body be well nourished
than that I look sveldt, so I eat anyway. I know there will come I
time when I *am* more able to go for those long fast walks through the
woods, and swim, and maybe even do a little weight training. I will
never again lift 2500 lbs. in one day though, nor walk five miles at
full tilt boogie. The bloodflow to my brain is my MOST important
consideration, and the electrical impulses that cause my brain to go
haywire is my second most important. Fitting into my old size 10
Calvin Klein jeans is about 35th on my list of priorities. ;o)

Oh, and more power to you for keeping your chocolate intake under
control. You live in Switzerland, where the best chocolate in the
world can be found <IMO>. But OTOH (on the other hand) you get the
GOOD chocolate, not the nougat bars with caramel and nuts and
marshmallow, covered with brown stuff that 'resembles' chocolate but
is really 80% sugar and has almost no cocoa in it at all. LOL

Take GOOD Care,

Jane
btw - thanks for the compliment. <blush>
