And it's a Keeper. The forward was written by Dr. David G. Simons
(Coauthor of Travell & Simon's Myofascial Pain and Dysfunction: the
Trigger Point Manual - ("The BIG Book"). Some quotes:

"The message of this voice is a voice in a wilderness of neglect."

"It is becoming increasingly clear that nearly all fibromyalgia
patients have myofascial trigger points that are contributing
significantly to their total pain programs. Some patients are
diagnosed as having fibromyalgia when in fact they only have much more
treatable multiple trigger points. Inactivation of the trigger points
of fibromyalgia patients requires especially delicate and skilled
treatment.

Skilled clinicians recognize myofascial trigger points as the most
common cause of ubiquitous enigmatic musculoskeletal pain, but finding
a truly skilled practitioner can be frustratingly difficult. The
guidance in this book can serve practitioners who have yet to
understand the the nature of their own musculoskeletal pain can also
benefit patients who are unable to find a practitioner adequately
skilled in this neglected subject.

There is no substitute for learning how to control your own
musculoskeletal pain. Treating myofascial trigger points yourself
addresses the *source* if that kind of common pain and is not just a
way of temporarily relieving it".

Devin Starlanyl writes:

"There has been a great need for a comprehensive and easy-to-to-use-
resource to help patients identify individual myofascial trigger points
and treat themselves. Clair Davies' "Trigger Point Therapy Workbook"
fills that need. I believe this book will help end a great deal of
needless suffering and prevent a great deal of unnecessary surgery."

Since the book arrived earlier today it's been hard to put it down.
Mr. Davies, formerly a Master piano tuner, was being successfully
treated for his shoulder problems when his massage therapist moved
away. That's when he discovered no one else was able to replicated her
technique, but he fortunately remembered the two big volumes she often
referred to and mentioned. He bought the books, studied them, and
found his life's calling. So even though he'd already past his 60th
birthday, he put a successful career behind him and began training to
become a massage therapist with the goal of making Travell and Simmon's
work accessible to patients and easy for body workers to use on
themselves without use of injections. Both groups would be able to
treat themselves using their hands and easy to obtain props.

His drawings are pretty basic, but this isn't acupuncture where one
has to know exactly where a point is before taking action- instead his
drawings just need to be a general signpost and our own reaction lets
us begin our own mapping process. I suppose if one wants more
precision there's Travell and Simmons (which is on my wish list - I
keep worrying about it going OOP ) but just be prepared for that hefty
price tag.

There are a number of points in places one would never think about (or
might be embarrassed to) and so might easily attribute symptoms to
another cause. Who woulda thunk gas, bloating cramping, the runs,
often misDX'd as IBS or gallbladder he says could be a tummy trigger
(Janey Poo, are you there? bending over in a certain position a lot,
like picking up rocks or maybe some sort of house work could have
brought that episode on... what do you think? could it be?)

He talks about sitting too long in certain positions and how it can
manifest in er, different internal ways for men and women. Lots of
info on headaches, neck and jaw pain, teeth, shoulders, joint pain,
knees, feet (yeah!!!!) hands, (Double yeah!!!), repetitive pain,
treating accident trauma, hips...
No affiliation, honest. Use common sense and don't overdo. He gives
info on what kind of pressure, strokes and duration. One could do some
serious damage to oneself if one doesn't pay attention to what the body
tells her so listen carefully to it when treating it, okay? Squashing
an already compressed nerve, for example, makes that nerve angry.
Angry nerve makes life turn ugly fast. blech...

OK, time to put the belly dance work out on;^)
