Dear Kitten:
Been there done that... I have ADD but didn't realize it until my two
hyperactive boys grew up and moved out about 9 years ago. When I was
all alone with out the boys to focus on I started chasing my tail, not
being able to keep a job more than 1 year at a time, I still have 15
different projects laying around my house, hence the clutter in my mind
and my home.
I was dx'd with ADD about 9 years ago and tried Ritalin then
methylphenidate (Generic) during my time returning to college and my
new career in Architectural computer design & drafting. Big changes
occurred when I started taking the prescription. All positive too. I
found out I really am SMART!
My tendency of hyper-focusing and finding it hard to pull out of a
project or job continued, Kitten. I did improve by decreasing my
impulsivity. I am very happy I was dx'd with ADD. The medication has
been a blessing. It worked so I know I am an ADD person. In fact, I
have been all my life - it was just ignored and overlooked. My 2
brothers and 1 sister had ADD and ADHD. My 2 sons were ADD and ADHD
when they were in nursery school. Then I began to look into it after
my boys grew up because I was still mind-racing and unable to focus.
So as the story goes... "It's a good thing" that I use the stimulants
whenever I work. Since I am disabled now I don't take them as much.
My psychiatrist wants me to take them to stay awake during the day
because I also have CFIDS. I tried it and felt awful in the
afternoons because my body wanted to sleep at nap time. So I only take
the ADD medication when I am under "social pressure" and it would
benefit me to be sharp for a specific function. ADD is a chemical
imbalance. There are several different types of ADD/ADHD medications.
I remember Adderal scared me. It was way too strong for me.
Methylphenidate SR works best for me. It is the generic form of
Ritalin SR. I share this experience because there has been too many
ADD / Ritalin bashing stories floating around. My story has a good
ending. I have ADD and the little "smart" pills work! My Husband and
I call them my "smart" pills as a code while out and about. <g> Too bad
there is no specific method to diagnose ADD specifically. Just take
one's history and then if the pills work... you are ... hmmm...
Luv,
Meg
