Flu Pandemic May Begin When Vaccines Are Ready

Knowledge of Health, Inc. – Blog – May 9, 2006 – Many are watching for
the
flu pandemic to show up right after the vaccine makers produce enough
vaccine. The US Government has shelled out $1 billion for new flu
vaccines
that are not egg-based but cell-based (is this an admission the current
vaccines have some drawbacks?). Imagine you are a vaccine maker and all
your
development costs are borne by government grants and promotion costs
are
also borne by government agencies who create public fear to get people
to
roll up their sleeves.

Now the subsequent problem arises: how to get the public to line up for
the
shots? This can be done with mandates that everyone (worldwide) get a
flu
shot annually, says Barbara Loe Fisher, president of the National
Vaccine
Information Center (www.nvic.org) First, precondition the public to
live in
“abject fear” of the flu, says Fisher.

Unless the public is ready to oppose the idea, free public-paid flu
shots
may be lobbied for in every state of the union and the public will
falsely
believe “free” sounds like a good idea. Tell a poor family that you can
now
get free flu shots, they are likely to think this is a wonderful
godsend,
after all, they couldn’t afford the shots otherwise. Your kids won’t be
able
to go to school without the flu shots. The same mandate will be
enforced for
your place of employment.

Will the flu shots work? There is no current evidence the current flu
shots
work or reduce mortality rates. The primary risk for mortality is among
the
elderly who have weakened immune systems. Flu shots plus Tamiflu have
not
been proven to eliminate flu outbreaks in nursing homes.
