OMG Jane, I just read your review and couldn't believe what the dirty
dozen were!

"The "dirty dozen, in order of importance, are:
dairy, chocolate, eggs, citrus fruits, meat, wheat, nuts and
peanuts, tomatoes, onions, corn, apples and bananas."

<snipped>

So,what the heck is there left to eat after you take away the 'dirty
dozen", thats my whole diet! LOL!

I didn't actually DO the elimination diet properly, but I did find
myself paying closer attention to how I felt when I ate certain foods.
Oddly enough, our bodies seem to LOVE that which is worst for us
sometimes. I *love* dairy products of all kinds - milk, all cheeses,
cottage cheese, ice cream . . . but I've been cutting back on it and my
gut feels better for it.

According to the Ayurvedics, you can tell which foods you should stay
away from by taking note of the tastes you seem to crave most. For
instance, some people like salty foods most, some like sweet etc.
That's all taken into account on an Ayurvedic diet. My B.I.L. is a
Macrobiotic Vegetarian who's really into TM and Ayurveda and all that,
and he gave me this quiz one time to help fingure out which 'type' I
am. I think they're Pitta, Vata and Kaffa and I'm a Vata. I forget
what he said I should stay away from, though. LOL I do love salty
foods most, I think.

Thanks for the book review! Going to add this book to my library.

You're welcome. My biggest thing about food is - STAY AWAY FROM
PROCESSED FOODS. I try to follow two rules about food:

1. - Eat more like our ancestors did, to give us energy for our bodies
to work a little more like our ancestors' did. Eat hearty meals at
least two times a day, including foods from all four food groups if
possible. Most people with fibro don't get enough calories to make it
through a day. A nutritionist once told me, "You know the saying - you
burn 100 calories wlaking a mile? Well, you also NEED 100 calories to
have the energy to walk a mile."

2. - Shop around the outside edges of the grocery store first, and only
buy what you REALLY need from the inner aisles. The outside edge of a
grocery store has the grains (bakery dept.), fresh fruits and veggies
(produce), milk 'n cheese 'n other calcium rich foods (dairy) and, most
important, High Protein (Meat Dept.)

It's tempting to just have a piece of toast for lunch, cuz it's a lot
more work to make yourself a sandwich on whole grain bread with REAL
meat (leftovers from roasts, chicken, etc.) and fresh veggies like
cucumber slices and tomatoes and such. It's hard to get up the energy
to make yourself eat properly. But it's SOOOOOOOOO worth it!! This is
what changed me from a crippled up Fibro gal to a woman with the
strength and energy to work hard enough to give myself a brain
aneurysm. LOL

Food is the biggest key, as far as I'm concerned, and it's important to
figure out which foods send you into a flare. You do this by watching
what you eat and taking careful note of how it makes you feel. To me,
the Dirty Dozen are just the most *likely* 12 foods to make note of,
cuz they're the most common foods that cause people problems. But it's
not necessary to cut them all out of your diet. I think that would be
*BAD*. It's a *guide*. <IMO> the best way to figure out what you
should and shouldn't eat is to keep a food diary that includes
everything you eat and drink, and keep notes about how you feel, how
you slept, how much you hurt etc. at the same time.

Take GOOD Care,

Jane
