Re: is Dr. Devin Starlanyl a real m.d.?

hey cb
a bit of history with this, it is a repeat of a discussion [spelled
slightly acrimonious] from iirc, '97 whereby someone questioned her
use of the title 'Doctor" and "MD". a brouhaha went on [in the
group] about was devin even really a 'doctor' - a major proponent of
the 'check credentials' side was 'tony c',
iirc, his belief was/is that if you don't maintain your licensure,
you aren't entitled to use 'doctor'. and, in general, he didn't much
care for the dr title anyway. called his doc by first name.
lori, steve, ann, and many others got involved. many nyms and names
not active now.
now - if you have the degree, you can use the title...even 'if' you
aren't actively practicing. only if you have been found guilty of
something and legally stripped of your credentials do you lose the
legal right to use 'doctor'. which has not happened to devin...
there were [and are again now] comparisons to other individuals who
use the title, when it is not a medical doctor.
[as an aside, anyone who has completed a doctoral program is entitled
to use the title, - with attendant diff. of 'field' - for instance a
biochemist, a dentist, even a chiro; but also engineers,
etc.etc...shoot, a lawyer can be a juris doctor. but only a 'medical
doctor' - MD, is supposed to use the title???? beats me...]
i'll come back to her cv in a moment
as to the state, she has worked extensively with brattleboro vt
hospital [and 'they' referred to her as dr at first] and acted as
support adviser for their online group, but last i knew, lived in
West Chesterfield, NH.
back to her credentials,
she's a native american with great interest in that area of history
and culture,
yes, she finished medical school, she had to have done so because she
was an er trauma surgeon at - iirc - miami hospital. that is in
public records
when an auto accident triggered her own personal journey into the
fms/mps[myofascial pain syndrome] world, she ultimately left the
'active' practice of medicine [around '94 or so], and redirected her
life to the exploration of this danged syndrome that can so devastate
those with it.
herself included.
there was even an issue of why she was simply referred to as 'devin'
rather than always as dr devin starlanyl - the 'familiar' term came
about mostly because she was the 'only' devin and easy going about
how you addressed her
given the popularity of her papers, books, and seminars - she has
elected to 'not' do as much email and newsgroups as she did back in
the late '90s - back in the mid-'90s, she participated in many
newsgroups, and you could email her directly, and over time, it just
became overwhelming in volume. not to mention those in great need who
tried to get her to intercede in their care long distance.
she is 'retired' from active practice, and it is worthwhile to note
the formal disclaimer she has used for many, many years:
"Please do not request opinions on specific diagnoses, including test
interpretations. It is illegal to give specific treatment advice for
individual patients over the Internet. Devin Starlanyl is not in
medical practice. We are restricted by law to providing general
information such as can be found in a medical text."
there were even some accusations of major fights between doctors ie,
dr nye, devin, dr st. amand, and a couple of others - this was mostly
because of the strong language used by some - but even that calmed
down over time and as more medical information became available.
bottom, line, everyone benefited from a diversity of opinion, even if
it was sometimes delivered in terms that might appear argumentative.
anywho - back on track:
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
her site, and related work is done under the auspices of:
FIBROMYALGIA AND CHRONIC MYOFASCIAL PAIN INSTITUTE INC
72 SPAULDING HILL RD
W CHESTERFLD, NH
03466-3119
a tax exempt org.
of which she is the founder and president
so - here is what is confirmed - she practiced as a trauma surgeon in
florida,
had an auto accident where she was rear-ended and suffered damage
developed fms and other syndromes
at around the same time, she and her husband moved to new england.
between '94 and '96 fibro and pain became so severe that she switched
fields and was involved in several areas that she could use her
knowledge while at the same time became an acknowledged innovator and
expert on fms.
The National Institutes of Health listed her as an MD for conferences
and seminars, along with the hospital in brattleboro vt. 'and' four
publishers of medical books and papers, 'and' at least 7 renowned
doctors who are her peers and in a position to know.
she 'discontinued' any private practice due to both her health status
and her new advocacy for fms
she is entitled to the title of doctor, but often didn't use it, and
virtually never does currently - though others can [and do] still do
so, 'and' she specifically lists that she is 'not in practice' on
her website and other materials
given the information that i found, i have no reason to need to know
which school she graduated from
her verified known work shows that she was a doctor, stopped active
practice, and specifically refuses to 'treat' anyone coming to her as
a result of her current work.
oh! and she and her husband make some pretty decent wine, and mensa
thinks the world of her.

hth
be well
paul

Paul thanks,
All that information and searching and you still did not answer the
question of did she graduate or not.

BTW I posted the info as to who can be called doctor in a previous post.
An Intern can be called doctor but is not an MD until they graduate and get
the license.
I myself look at what you posted and wonder was she 2 months away and then
the accident happened and she did not graduate.
I wanted the answer because for me it would be proof as to the credit of
the word of the person who told it to me!!!

If what was said to me and what was posted in the past is not true
than,
Why did she use to post as an MD and then just Devin J Starlanyl?
Why does one of her past books on page 3 list her as MD and since
then have
not?
Even if you are not actively practicing medicine you have earned the
right
if you graduated to have the title of MD.
Nobody has proven or dis-proven this yet have they?

How can you be a "m.d." aka medical doctor without graduating medical

You can look through them for an argument with David A. Nye MD
nyeda@xxxxxxxx about her no longer being an MD.

Yes but did she graduate?
I don't have time to look right now.
