OT for Oldtimers: Lhamo Update -Long

Dear FMly,

What a wonderful surprise - all this time I'd thought the usenet groups
had simply disappeared into the internet ether... Imagine my joy upon
seeing so many dear familiar names - Nanny's was the first to catch my
eye. It's like coming home.

It breaks my heart to see that our beloved Good Queen Bess has left us.
But we have been blessed to have felt her kind presence and enjoyed
her gentle wit.

So much has happened since we were last together. Mom became ill and
that put an end to my travels to Nepal. The true hero of my life, my
dad passed away in 2003 after a sudden illness; in 2004 I was struck
by a car while crossing a parking lot to catch a bus, fracturing my
ankle and leg - 8 days in hospital, the fractures took over a year to
heal and the plate and screws will remain in place. There's a lot of
nerve damage to deal with also.

And then.... my mother passed away less than a month after the
accident. Whooo... talk about a challenging period of life! I stopped
asking if things could get worse, but then my beloved 17 yo geezer tom
cat Mr. OK Kitty Superior died this past November and that hurt more
than everything else because he was all I have left in this world.
Even when I wouldn't have cared about feeding myself on those really
bad days or getting up, there was a soft paw on my cheek early every
morning (and a Siamese style yowl to wake the dead if that failed) and
it's no luxury not having him around to "disturb" my sleep anymore.

Looking forward to fastforwarding legal matters (and hoping the matter
can be mediated); before depositions were taken the insurance company
claimed *I *was 60% at fault because I failed to make eye contact with
the driver who never looked in my direction before turning in front of
me. We kind of made eye contact when I landed on her hood but that
doesn't count, lol.

If it doesn't get settled the court date has been set for November of
this year - hate to have it come to that but the initial settlement
figure didn't cover all my medical expenses, since the VA refused to
transfer me to their facility after the accident Medicare refused to
pay some of the expenses and I ended up in collections so things are
really messy. Now the VA is covering my care but because I'm in
litigation many VA doctors in the tightly booked Pain Clinic are
refusing to see me until the case is over because they don't want to be
subpoenaed.

The good news is after my old laptop shriveled up and died I got a new
one under the VA's Independent Living program. They also provided me
with a printer, digital camera, so I can sell my knitting and beading,
computer table, a microwave to save cooking time, an adjustable bed
(thank goodness) and other items to make life easy around the house
thanks to recommendations of the observant gentleman who made the home
visit. A recliner is also being ordered.

I do plan to return to Nepal after the legal stuff is done to see my
friends sort through my things and see for myself how things are. I
just gave up the apartment last month and everything is being stored
for the time being.
