My experience is that if you want it done right, you hire a licensed
professional and you stick to their *** every minute of the job.
The self done job on this house, meant that we had a $5,000 cost overrun on the
roof, meant we had to rewire parts of the house (several things were wired
directly into the main--some still are--too hard to get to), and everything was
not where it was expected. Every little thing, like replacing the kitchen sink
cost more and took more time, because of the botch job of the former owner.
Work done by yourself is harder to document for selling purposes in the future.
DH does a lot of maintenance type things. He is good at electricity and a few
other things. We do the re-wiring of the sockets and switches, under the
supervision of a licensed electrician. Knowing what your limits are is critical
to doing work yourself.
Finishing work really doesn't fit in to the same kinds of problems. Finishing
work can be more easily changed.
