This is confusing. Do you mean "partitions" on your hard
drive? Or do you have several hard drives and mean... 'er..
something else?

You can get a full Linux OS designed to be run direct from
the CDROM. Its got loads of tools you could probably have
used to mount the suspect drive and recover the files from.

Search "Knoppix".

I think there is a FreeBSD version too.

They're free to download and use. No registration required. ;)



I might suggest that before you get to installing a new OS,
you make sure you use a disk paritioning tool to create at
least two partitions on your hard drive, (assuming you only
have one), one for your operating system, and the other for
your data. This way, even a total unrecoverable system crash
should not put your files at risk.
