Sell and ship outside the United States?

After buying on ebay for several years I made the plunge and listed several
items last week. I've sold many items locally the past few years so I know
how to price things, write ads, and deal with buyers. Still I'm reluctant
to sell and ship outside the US. I was contacted by people in Germany,
France, Canada, and South Korea about buying my auction items. I told them
all no but wonder maybe I should sell to them? The shipping seems really
high and the customs forms are confusing. Several months ago I mailed
something with a customs form to Germany and the item vanished somewhere
between here and there.

So my question is, do the benefits ($$$) of selling to people outside the
United States outweigh the risks? I see some people who do sell and ship
internationally exclude certain countries like Italy. Why is that?

And finally, I don't know how to include an ebay shipping calculator in my
auction pages:-( Is it possible to have a shipping calculator if you use
the "Keep it simple" format for selling an item? I've read the community
forums but I still can't get the calculator to appear.
