I haven't sold for a while but it seems ebay is forever screwing around
with the above selling format. Can I no longer use HTML? I tried
searching for categories and the list was "bleached out". Can I still
use
my own pics on my own website? Do I just use the URL of that picture?
Before with HTML I used <img src=http://wwwetc....> but I don't think
this works. What's going on??
The selling interface was changed a quite bit a few months ago, but
everything that you could do before can still be done - it just looks
different. Choosing the proper selling catagory has changed (which you
already found out).
When you get to the part where you paste your HTML ad, there are two
tabs - be sure you have selected HTML. Also there is an option to load
a
picture (first one is free) as your main picture. This also serves as
your gallery picture. I usually fix up one image specifically for this
since I always do a gallery picture. Other pictures can be loaded on
your
server and be linked to from your ad.
Until you get used to the new selling page, look over each thing like it
is totally new. Many things like how you choose a shipping method, sell
multiple items, etc. have changed.
First, I have tried selling an item by typing in the required 3 - 5 words
item description and then choosing "Keep it simple". After clicking "Start
selling" I get the create your listing page and item 2 does show me
"suggested categories" and I can even "Browse categories" So far so
good......
BUT, I can't seem to upload a free picture under Step 3, "Bring your item
to
life with pictures". Is the picture from my own hard drive? It won't
accept
one I have uploaded to my server with it's own URL address. I just keep
waiting and waiting for it to upload and nothing happens! The old method I
could do this quickly and easily.
If it's from my own hard drive should it read something like C:\Documents
and Settings\Owner\My Documents\littlebritches2.JPG ? Does it matter if
JPG is upper or lower case? I've tried both and it doesn't matter.
Neither
will upload! It should only take a few seconds right? Anyway, nothing
works
and I'm stuck here unable to upload a Free photo. Previously, I didn't
even
bother with their free photo offer. I just bought the gallery photo for
$.35
and in my listing description I put in the img src and the URL address of
each photo from my server.
How do you now add the $.35 Gallery Picture? I clicked on the little box,
and nothing! Clicking on the little question mark tells me nothing also.
So I ignored that and went to the description and tried putting in the URL
(img src=) address of my own photos and it doesn't recognize it. I
couldn't
find anywhere where I can choose HTML using two tabs as you mentioned.
Where
is this?
Frustrated, I tried selling again under the "Customize your listing" (as
opposed to "keep it simple") and clicked "Start selling" I get the Select
a
category page. Even if I type in an item, say "Book" I can't Browse or
search categories as they are all whited or faded out! Why?
I've been on ebay for years and I have never been so frustrated and angry
at
ebay for changing things. I've got things to sell and just can't do it!
I'm totally stuck here and would really appreciate any guidance. I might
just have to start selling only on craigslist!
Thanks,
Ron
Let me make a suggestion: Download TurboLister. When you create a
"New" ad it's pretty straightforward. If you want to use html, use
that for the description.
Forget eBay's image system. Upload your images to a free image host
like Photobucket and then, in the html, use
<img src=
http://i48.photobucket.com/albums/f244/cooper213/TRAVELER.jpg ">
adjusted for your own data. You put a similar line in the gallery box
omitting the <img src=" ">. Just url.
Everything's on one page. You can preview your ad at any time.
If you like the ad, upload it to eBay. It's all there in simple
steps. No charge for it.

Thanks Tony and Stevie. I got a speedy reply from Mark at eBay's customer
support. Here's his reply;
"Thank you for writing eBay in regard to the problem that you're having
with adding pictures on the "Keep it simple" selling form and selecting
categories when using the full featured Sell your Item form.
It sounds like you have a technical problem caused by an interference
with the JavaScript that eBay picture hosting and the Sell your Item
form uses. There are several reasons why this can happen. First, I'll
explain some steps you can take to resolve the issue yourself. If that
doesn't work, please reply to this email with answers to the questions
below. We'll be happy to help you further.
To resolve the issue on your own, follow these steps:
1. Close all Internet browsers.
2. Clear your cache:
- On Internet Explorer 5.0 or 6.0, go to the "Tools" menu, and select
the "Internet Options" option.
- Click the "Delete Files" button.
- Select the "Delete all offline content" check box.
- Click the "OK" button.
- In the next window, click the "OK" button.
3. Temporarily disable any ad or pop-up blocking features that your
program is running. These can interfere with the Picture Services
JavaScript. Types of software that have been known to cause problems
are:
- Spyware removal programs (such as Ad-Aware)
- Pop-up blockers (such as Pop-Up Stopper)
- "Ad busting" software that might be included with your firewall
If you have the Service Pack 2 (SP2) for Windows XP, it comes with a
built in pop-up stopper. For instructions on adjusting this feature to
allow pop-ups from eBay, go to:
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/using/web/sp2_popupblocker.mspx
4. Make sure that you have JavaScript enabled and your security settings
are not too high. Click the "Tools" menu, and select the "Internet
Options" option. Click the "Security" tab, click the "Default Level"
button, and then click the "OK" button.
After you complete these steps, you should be able to select a category
by using the "Customize your listing" option to access the Full Featured
Sell your Item form. This is also the form you would use if you use
self-hosted pictures.
You may upload your Gallery picture directly to eBays using eBay's
Basic, Standard, or Enhanced uploaders. You may also use the
"Self-hosting" tab in the Add Pictures window to specify a picture URL
for the Gallery image.
The full featured Sell your Item form will also give you the ability to
enter your own HTML for the description so that you may embed images
into your description using the IMG SRC tag.
From the full featured form, you may also select the option for"Calculated: Cost varies by buyer location" if you are shipping with
USPS or UPS. This way you just need to select the package type, weight,
shipping method, and dimensions for the package (if necessary). The
shipping rate will automatically be calculated based on the buyer's zip
code. You may also add a handling fee to cover any handling and
packaging costs as the shipping rate will be the exact amount charged by
the shipping company.

I was able to do most of the things he suggested and I got things working
again, just as I did over a month ago. I hope this helps others.
