I can describe what I do, which is perfect for me (otherwise I would
do it differently).
1. I do not display anything that is incompatible with any browsers
(no flash, etc). Flash is a gimmick to sell to anxious sellers who do
not know better.
2. I have text displayed in a simple, no gimmicks, manner, surrounded
by a grey rectangle.
3. I do make thumbnails of all my pictures. The auction has thumbnails
on the page, but the user can click them and get to the actual
picture.
4. When video forms a part of the auction, I have a "video thumbnail",
which is a short animated GIF that shows a few first seconds of the
movie, one picture per 0.5 seconds. When the user clicks on it, they
can download a video.
5. I have a little library of text substitution, so when I say
:FREIGHT: $50
it replaces it with the statement:
Because this item is heavy, it can only be shipped via freight. You
will PAY THE CARRIER DIRECTLY. eBay\'s shipping calculator is NOT
binding on me and is provided for your entertainment only. Shipping
costs are usually very reasonable as I use Freightquote and they are
VERY good. Local pickup in Lisle, IL is FREE. I do NOT have a loading
dock at my house. The fee for palletizing, crating and delivery to a
shipping terminal within 15 miles from me is $50.
I have my custom Linux scripts to do all of the above. (plus to list
stuff on ebay). I do not really spend any meaningful amount of time to
do technical tasks, only writing descriptions, working with photos,
etc.
