I got into a big brawl shipping a package today. I packed some items
in a
cardboard box I got from the grocery store and I just got a call from
the carrier that I was shipping "hazardous material ". Reason was the
box I used had some symbol on it CLEARLY intended for the original
content which I explained to them. The idiot I talked to even argued
that since another (idiot) working there had it formally described as
hazardeous then they might not even return it and I hade to go to some
whareouse and pick it up myself and sign a whole bunch of papers.
Choose your cardboard box carefully!
Goes without saying.
Reusing boxes, one must take care of these sorts of things.
For instance, you wouldn't leave an old tracking number on there, would
you ?
Taping up or using a magic marker to blot out a hazmat symbol, I would
hope,
would be very obvious to most people.
I done lived and I done learned. I may have looked stupid to some people
but that can be the price of an education.
I don't think its so much the mistake you made, but trying to pass it off
on brainless employees was the kicker for most here, I think.
Laws are very strict for the transport of hazardous materials for good
reason ... I believe that that one jet that nose dived into a FLA swamp
some years back, killing more than 100 people, was the result of some of
its improperly stored/labled hazmat cargo exploding.
With stakes like that, they would have been highly negligent had they
shipped. http://www.cnn.com/US/9611/15/valujet/index.html
I don't have a problem with them returning it. I had a problem with them
declaring it hazardeous goods and saying they will return it the same day,
then saying that they won't return it and I might have to pick it up, then
not returning it and shipping it.
Yeah, I have a problem with their having shipped it, too.
