Re: Bidding/sniping software?

However, sometime you have to trust someone. For example, you might
use Microsoft Word to create a list of your accounts and passwords,
and trust that MSWord does not surreptitiously send copies of your
document to Microsoft. That is a pretty safe bet.

Safer would be to use OpenOffice Writer, or some open source
database, where you could, if so inclined, read all the source
and see exactly what it's doing.

Risks of using MS Word include:

- having deleted stuff stay in the document (MS wants you
download a plug-in to really delete)

- not being able to open your own documents at some time
in the future because you upgraded your OS, but not
Office, and the old Office won't run or re-install

- not being able to open your own documents at some time
in the future because MS decided to enable subscription-
based licensing, and you decided not to stand and deliver

- not being able to open your own documents at some time
in the future, because MS got tired of supporting
old versions of .doc (again)

- not being able to open your own documents at some time
in the future, because the MS DRM mistook something in
your data or metadata for a copyright protection token,
and they want you to pay some random Hollywood
lawyer for an unlock key (that won't work anyway).

Meanwhile, back at the thread topic. Searching on:
"open source ebay sniping software"
gets a number of promising looking hits.
If at least one of these is what it appears to be,
no trust required.

I just log on to eBay and snipe manually. Always works.

Yup, but if you have a day job, it can be hard to
manually snipe a listing that ends during it.
