Except that it can take up to around 6 months before a cheque/check is
safe from bouncing so you'd be happy with waiting at least 6 months for
something if you paid by cheque/check?

Just because the bank release the funds from one into your account does
not mean a cheque/check has truly cleared, it can be pulled back at any
time especially if it was issued fraudulently or stolen.

A week, tops.
If you are dealing with $30,000 sure, give it more than that.
You can only be so paranoid in life.
I usually ship straight away when getting a check/MO, sometimes even
waiting a week or two to build up a few before going to the bank.
Haven't got burned yet ... Might it yet happen at some point ?
Sure, but the law of averages is on your side.

Same here, I ship on receipt and have never been burned. Makes me laugh
when people say they won't ship until cheques have cleared, poor
uneducated fools.

Yup. I'm not taking mail payments right now (for reasons that
should be obvious), but I when I do, I let them stack up for a
month or so and deposit them all at once.

In thousands of checks, one has bounced....and the embarrassed
sender quickly made it good.
