I've heard all the horror stories of
dealing with fraud, and how PayPal will take the money from your account
and how you lose the merchandise, etc
how can I protect
myself?
cancel your PayPal account and only accept checks or money orders. I
won't
accept payments through TheftPal and I'm doing just fine.
yet you accept personal checks. brilliant!
If a personal check clears, ship.
If not, don't ship.
Simple.
Except that it can take up to around 6 months before a cheque/check is safe
from bouncing so you'd be happy with waiting at least 6 months for something
if you paid by cheque/check?
Just because the bank release the funds from one into your account does not
mean a cheque/check has truly cleared, it can be pulled back at any time
especially if it was issued fraudulently or stolen.
Which is exactly how and why the very popular "you won the foreign
lottery!" scams are successful. Naive mark deposits funds, withdraws
some/most to "pay for the state taxes" and returns it to the sender.
We've seen a real increase in these scams at my credit union.
