True...It is not good that the customer (you) had no control over what you
wanted to pay.

I discovered something unexpected (to me) in Paypal which others might
like to be aware of.
I bought an item on ebay for $550. Paypal was not listed as a payment
method but I agreed with the seller to pay an extra 50 for postage and
to cover the paypal fee. This did not get entered into eBay and the
seller had not enabled payment by paypal. I then paid by paypal
dircectly by typing in the $600 figure and the sellers email address.
Then Paypal invited me to type in my ebay username and item number.
It seemed a good idea to connect the payment to the item so I did.
Paypal then paid, but it paid $550 which is got from ebay's database
and it ignored the $600 that I had typed in. I didn't notice this
until the seller asked why I had paid too little.
I thought I had made a mistake, so i went back to paypal to pay the
extra 50. It invited me to add user and item again so I did. Then
it changed the $50 to $550 on the final screen. This time I noticed!
So, it is smart enough to set the payment to what eBay tells it, but
not smart enough to (a) warn you that it has changed the figure you
typed in and (b) not smart enough to know that you already paid.
Cue: usual rants about Paypal....
