Neither CL or Freecycle is very effective where I am - I live out in

Freecycle is pretty useless in Phoenix. There are
like a dozen lists. Phoenix, Scottsdale, East Valley,
Mesa, Glendale etc. The moderators make you prove where
you live in order to get on the list. Then if they find
out you're accepting free stuff and re-selling it on
eBay, you get kicked off the list.
And the "audition" for receiving free stuff is hilarious.
OFFER:
"One, very used, beat up widget"
Then come the "auditions".
"I am blind and have one leg. I collect used widgets,
repair them and give them to local retarded kids who
live in homeless shelters because their parents were
killed in violent crimes. I'd like to have your widget.
I'll have the kids at the orphanage say a special prayer
for you if I am the recipient."
I'm not exaggerating. We gave away a utility trailer once.
I got emails that topped even that for a pathetic plea.
I hear ya!
Their hatred of ebay resellers is outrageous. I actually always state
in my OFFER ads that resellers are welcome to pick up my items, just
to spite them. I say something like "resellers are welcome to pick up
this item, not that I think that it is resellable".
Plus, there are flakes, idiots, timewasters, "let me promise to pick
this item while I am asking my husband" types etc.
(there is never anything worth reselling there)
