ACH (Automated Clearing House) transactions.

Only use paper checks with trusted payees, and then only
when there is no alternative. Even though you may trust the
utility company, they can't read the minds of all their
employees.

Check with your bank or CU, and ask what protections you
have against unauthorized ACH transactions.

Defense is open a separate account for echeck use. Keep minimal money
in acct.
BTW I use E checks on a poker site. They asked for more than bank info
and sent an email which needed a reply.
