Hi,
I am soon listing an office machine, with the option of including several
books (total weight five pounds) in the auction if the buyer wants them.
I will detail in the auction that the books are included, but optional.
Should the UPS shipping generator I use reflect the weight *with* the books,
and offer a discount on shipping if the books are not included?
or
Should the UPS shipping generator I use reflect the weight *without* the
books, and offer an increase in shipping price if the books are included?
Just curious about which way you think I should do this.
Thanks,
Jon
Choice auctions are forbidden by eBay - your auction could be terminated.
Either include the books with a reference that they will be mailed separately (to utilize a media mail rate) or list them as a separate auction.
The OP did not describe a choice auction. Read it again.

No, that's not the definition of a choice auction. A choice auction is a choice between two or more items; in this case, it's more like a "bonus" which the winning bidder can accept or deny. It's not a good way to do things, but that's what he's trying to do.
In this case, a choice auction would be "you can choose between the books OR the office machine." http://pages.ebay.com/help/policies/listing-choice.html
Kris
In the above case, it's just two items - machine with / without the books, but it's still a choice.
Try it - set up such an auction and then use another email address to complain. See if eBay shuts it down. (However, don't try this in a Power seller account, as eBay will likely let it go so as not to upset a higher paying customer.)
