In the number's game I'd rate RAM and Hard Disk space above processor speed.
Most machines come with built in sound, Ethernet and graphics these days,
but if you're planning on playing games the graphics/video components
(different names for the same thing) is a very important (it has a much
bigger influence on performance than any other single factor, it does most
of the 'processing' in graphic intensive applications, the processor less
so).
To tell what's hot and not in the graphics card world this might be useful:
http://www.tomshardware.com/2005/12/02/vga_charts_viii/.
If you're not going to play games any graphics card will be fine.
As for processors it has to be said that currently AMD processors offer the
best value for money/performance wise, here especially so in games, as well
as the lowest running temperatures (a big factor in reliability) and power
consumption. Athlon 64's are all outstanding value and all capable of
'64-bit' operation, the next 'big thing' in computing. This is especially
true in maths intensive applications like games (there's a lot of maths done
to bring those 3d scenes to life) and CAD/3d modelling, where they just
leave Intel's offerings in the dust.
Hope that helps,
Julian
