I had the following experience when shipping to Canada via UPS:
UPS made me put up a credit card, and have it open ended. That meant if
Canada decided that there was more duty due to Canada that they would
backcharge my credit card. They would not accept the shipment any other
way. Even prepaid. I guess UPS has had as many disputes and unpleasant
experiences with Canadian customs as the rest of us and wanted to cover
their ass.
I would disallow the winner's bid and offer it as a Second Chance to the
next lowest US bidder.
I sold two kayaks with SPECIFIC instructions that they had to be picked up
in Las Vegas. NO SHIPPING. I had bids from people in New Jersey and a
dozen other places. I had people begging for me to ship them UPS, although
they exceeded the 108" limit, and said so in the description. I had people
who wanted me to palletize them and ship them.
I invoiced the buyer, in LA, and e mailed him that these were for pickup in
LV. He acted like, "well, duh, that's what it said in the auction." The
buyer drove up from LA, and put them BOTH on top of a Cadillac Escalade and
drove off. He was an Asian, but at least he read and comprehended English
better than a lot of US citizens.
And Canadians.
