I've always been a bit confused about

For me personally, if my GF were to buy an
essentially useless item for me that cost
a gazillion dollars, I would not be any more
sure of her love for me.

Buy me a horse, a guitar, a house. Something
that is useful. A rock on my finger just
gets in the way.
