Modern PSD files are (lossless) compressed using RLE by default,
otherwise they'd be huge (they're only big).
There's also a flattened image saved simultaneously with the layered
image, a features which you can turn off if you don't need it ("Always
Maximize Compatbility.. PSD Files" in Preferences).
