Never thought I'd see it, but folks in alot of other places are paying
more for a gallon of gas than a driver in California.

Yesterday:

$2.98, Valero, Alameda,CA

Price in Belgium,

5.33 euro = $6.68 per gallon.!

How big is Belgium? How many many miles or km's from oneside of the
country to the other? From one tip of my state to the other is 675
miles.

Unless you make a habit of driving from one end of the country to the other what difference do you imagine that should make to the price of fuel?

The problem is that we have to drive everywhere. I haven't been to Belgium, but if it is like the bits of Europe I glimpsed, walking and biking to the store and the schools are far more commonplace than driving the car. We don't have much in the way of public transportation either.

Our entire infastructure is pretty dependent on having a car. There are exceptions, like Manhattan, but they're pretty far between. Even in Chicago, the public transportation is not really efficient. You can take a train into the city, but it will likely will stop on a different side of the city than your final destination. From there, you have to cab it or bus it. Always a pleasure in the winter.

Contrasted to the underground trains on Paris, it is pretty clunky.
