This means that what they sold may not all be hp-branded
gear. They were likely working in the department that
processes excess/surplus/retired/failed site equipment
of all brands. Could be old Vectras. Could also be K&E
drafting equipment or IBM typewriters.
It could also be R&D and production prototypes of hp
devices. If they were selling such, it was only a matter
of time before they sold one to a current or former hp
employee who would blow the whistle.
There's some irony here. Excess site gear used to be
[live] auctioned to the employees. hp stopped that about
a decade ago. I don't recall if it was due to a tax issue,
or due to unsupportable protos ending up in trade customer
hands, or something else.
Last I knew, some of the ERP gear does get re-used on site,
and some gets scavenged for parts at a support centers, but
most of it get shrinkwrapped to a skid, and sent out for
shredding and recycling of the raw materials.
