I =had= McAfee years ago when it came on some computer I bought, and I
thought it worked great. That machine died and I got another one with
Norton which works fine for me, too, but a friend who I help with his
machine was looking for something and I suggested McAfee to him.
Terrible mistake. Later versions of McAfee assume IE is your default
browser and rely on Active-X IE extensions for updates. This guy had
never even seen IE, and couldn't handle switching back and forth for
this one purpose. It was like pulling teeth to figure out where and
how to download updates on the McAfee site without IE, and I had to
write up a page of instructions for him to follow. I'm sure he didn't
update as often as he might have, but he got through the year OK and
dumped that thing the day his subscription was up. AVG free is
working fine for him.
