flow) to generate electricity. What water is not needed (when demand is
lower) is bypassed and dumped.
A major exception is at Grand Coulee where during off-peak periods, excess
water is pumped upwards ~ 280 ft in elevation from Lake Roosevelt and into
Banks Lake--( an ancient, previously dry lakebed )
--Then, if peak requirements exceed main powerhouse capacity, the flow can
be reversed, with the pumps now functioning instead as generators.
