Here's what I really miss, and I'm sure cimitron can do this, prolly not
mastercamx3...but i'm not sure...
If your machining a face on a solid, lets say your machining a boss
standing up, looks like an upside down salad bowl...and you throw a spiral
toolpath on it.
No biggie here, but...
What if on the bottom of the bowl was a rectangle a little bigger than the
bowl. Apply the same toolpath and the results prolly suck. Chances are you
would break it up into the bowl, and the two flat floors on each side....
but....
If it's a solid, and you select the bowl and cut it with this suweet
spiral
cut...you can extend the toolpath, and it will continue the same pattern
but
literally follow the model as needed, even down walls if you extend it far
enough. At the end of all this I would limit the depth to the floor of the
rectangle if needed and get this spiral that jumps in the air when not
contacting, throw in a value for it to connect contours like 10 inches and
it spirals in the open making unbelievably constant toolpath. Not one jump
in the air start to finish. At this point get crazy and tell it to double
the feedrate over air.
Even though it's 3d, technically it's a real helix, so add cutter comp to
it, most machines will comp a true helix.
Havn't seen the guys even come close with cimitron, and theyv'e had it for
3 years.
But I still bet it does it just like ug.
Vinny:
Pocket>Facing>True Spiral>Uncheck "spiral from inside to outside".
Surface Finish>Project>NCI> pick your previous pocket routine.
Boom, you're done.

Thanks, I forgot all about projecting toolpaths.
