The bearing sets on a U series, Hermle or Micron, are pretty stout.
Hitting it hard enough to mess up the alignment will mean something
else will break as well. You know, like a spindle or hold down bolt.
LOL

Reminds me of the last <to my knowledge> sunstrand the ole lazy B
bought...

horizontal 4 axes 2 pallet with about a 48dia B

only problem was the actual worm gear was 18in dia tops...bearings at
maybe at 24 but i doubt it...the rest of the table was simply
overhung...

Well Sam,
You wouldn't believe how strong the new generation of multi axis machine
tools are.
They have to be. A new Integrex will spin the rotary at 1000 RPM, IIRC. You
can turn and mill with them.
That ain't gonna happen with a worm gear drive. Vinny's machine also
directly measures the position in all of the axis - rotary and linear- so if
he's getting following errors, something is FU'd big time. Same with Hermle
or Deckel.

They just have to be properly set up and configured. When they aren't, you
have to toss a lot of the control functionality right out the window. The
30i Fanuc is the same. Very powerful but you have absolutely got to tell the
control exactly how the machine is mechanically set up or you're screwed.
Siemens and Heidenhain have been like this for a couple generations now.
