can be put into a square block, say to cut a cavity? All high & low
points have to be symmetrical about the part center line when done.
Maybe the CAD/CAM systems I've mentioned have the ability to easily
"square it off"?
Even in the great Cimatron <g> I have a struggle to get it exactly
right.
As I told Vinny, in UGNX, you would first import the original to an NX
part file then save. Then you create a new part file that I bring in
the part as a viewed in assembly. There are tons of tools for moving and
constraining an assembly component. You can even put the part on a set
of points if need be.

It gets MUCH deeper though: what if the customer sends you yet another
rev of the model??? The 3rd one this month? All that hard work for
nothing???

The beauty is if the customer sends you a new dumb solid, you re-import
it into the first saved NX part file then delete the old model. Now,
when you open your NC part file you will see the new model viewed in YET
the proper moved location you've placed it. It's the best thing since
sliced bread.

Ok new dumb solid imported into NX, now what happens to all previous
toolpaths?
Update by reseleting features to machine? or is it auto magic by ??
template maybe? just curious on how NX handles updates. How many hoops
ya jump thru?

Well, I'm just a newbie, so take this with a grain of sand, but with nx5 a 2 year old version, I added a chamfer around the part and ALL the ops needed regened. Even holes I drilled. Even stuff on the opposite side of the part I machined in a previous op.

Yes. You regenerate. The solid was affected. Right click on the top program group and regenerate. Most times your done. Don't fear regenerating. Even very large toolpaths like CavityMill go pretty quick That said, you don't HAVE to if you don't want to. It's just letting you know something changed.


I have to do the opposite hand part next, and I plan on having to reselect all the geometry to regen the ops.

I surely hope I'm totally doing things wrong.



Opposite hand parts can be don't using "Instance Operation".

1. You select the groups you want to mirror
2. Select Instance - Mirror (select the axis to mirror) The number of instanced ops (one) then go.The instanced ops are associative to the originals.

Note: You'll need to change climb to conventional on some paths and double check your lead-ins-outs, etc... Many aerospace shops (airplane wings) just buy left hand cutters and mirror at the control for simplicity btw.
