It means what it says, BB, "numerically controlled".
You're evading the question. What does "numerically controlled"
really mean?
Do some Google or dictionary or Wick research.
And CNCs are "numerically controlled" too <VBG>.
All I'm saying is that the basic definition of NC/CNC is fuzzy.
Bob, it's not fuzzy at all. John Parsons invented "numerical control" and
as such he gets to define it. The first numerically controlled machine was
a Bridgeport knee mill. Mr. Parsons used two operators, one on the saddle
and one on the table. Numbers were called out to the operators who each
moved their handle the amount called out.
The X,Y coordinate data was computed using "accounting machines" or punch
card tabulating equipment. Using this method Parsons was able to machine
complex 2D airfoil shapes on a manual mill and "numerical control" was
born.
An example; From Wic, the definition of computer is "a machine that
manipulates data according to a list of instructions."
Does an NC machine manipulate data according to a list of
instructions? Making movements in various axes would seem to be
manipulating the data it receives. Would that make CNC machines NC
machines? :)
A "CNC" usues a computerized control to compute the axes positioning data.
