GE made a serial card to plug into the tape reader driver slot that was used in some big shops that had dnc links installed. Offhand forget the part number but the board itself was on the door under the reader.
Greco ties their parallel data right into the reader head inputs and picks up the timing pulses there too. I haven't had time to sit down and make a handshake for a serial to parallel converter but it should be easily done. I run a 1050MMC and two 1050HL's and they all are very stable controls. I did replace the MMC memory board with an aftermaket Tulip board which I highly recommend. There are two Tulip boards available, one with a single memory and another with a dual memory setup with an A/B switch. The 1050 will only accomodate using one half of the dual memory board at a time. They recommend keeping the diagonstics on the other memory but I load both memory A and B with the exec system and load repeat programs on both A & B and move the switch accordingly. ( only switch when the control is off)
In my opinion the GE 1050hl is more fool proof control than any other in its time. It is almost impossible to misprogram an offset. The tool inspect feature is not on any of the other controls. The tool inspect allows you to retract the tool from the work using the manual controls, inspect/ change the insert/ change offsets/ and when finished it moves the tool back into position exactly the way you pulled it out and then feeds in the last .100 and continues with the cut.
