Tony,

Any overhead rail-mounted robots servicing two machines ?

John

Yup, but they are doing other tasks, not loading CNC machines.
Our applications are:
Machine loading (usually individual robot/machine, 100% due to required
cycle time).
Conveyor tracking (7th axis set up), the robot will track a moving
conveyor to load/unload parts without stopping the conveyor.
Camera systems, plucking parts from parts baskets.
Part handling (transfer systems).
Metal Pouring (casting).

The dynamic loading of an overhead system is a deterent to that design.
The supporting structure has to be what seems like 10x stronger (more
rigid) than what you think it should be in order to handle the dynamic
loading of a 6 axis robot to guarantee the repeatability of the robot. A
shaking robot doesn't load very well.

You can't 'idiot proof' anything....every time you try, they just make
better idiots.
