Funny story... I'm pretty accustomed to speaking to folks with different
English dialects, etc. Seeing as I talk to a bunch of Europeans,
Australians, French Canadians and plain 'ole Americans almost daily, the
diversity of the English I hear is pretty much as detailed as I can imagine
it gets... But on a road trip with my son to South Carolina, we stopped at
a place where this young girl serving us had a deep south accent (probably
not from SC) and the kept telling my son about how his breakfast came with
three pancakes... When the meal arrived, he was disappointed (he's 11 now
and was 9 or 10 then). Of course, he heard "Thirdee" in his mind and
thought it was going to be a huge plate of pancakes... :)

If you think different dialects are difficult, wait till you get on the
phone with someone who is from anotehr country (asia, middle east, India,
etc.) who also has an accent from a differnt part of the country than you
are from... For me, yesterday was a southern california living, asian guy
ordering a product for his across-the-border Mexican plant. Asian...
Southwestern US... Spanish... All influenced his English and although he
was speaking very clearly and in an educated manner, this NJ boy had a real
hard time understanding stuff he said... But that's life!
