I wouldn't run a computer without internet access. It's my window to the
outside.

Internet access is OK but you need a firewall/anit-virus.

The main thing in the case of shop computers is to turn the
auto-update feature *OFF* except for a one or a few [test]
machines, and then update the rest under manual control when it
has been verified the "update" doesn't cause problems.

FWIW -- If you can log-in as administrator, click on control
panel / automatic updates to set the automatic update option to
"download but not install." Also be reminded that in many cases
[but not all] you can use control panel / add-remove programs to
undo an update.

If you don't have administrator access, this indicates the IT
dept. is on a power trip as well as lazy, although it is
generally a good idea to normally run as a user with a lower
privilege level.

Good luck, and I hope you don't come in one day and find IT has
replaced all your old computers with new ones and scrapped the
old ones with the dongles, drives/customized programs & data, and
special cards.

naw, no admin access. But on the box I run, it's set to prompt me before
downloading. And that sucks like a blinking light in my friggen eye.
But seriously, WTF. Iv'e done that crap for a living, who the hell keeps 20
boxes updated with windows auto update?
NOBODY! It's ridiculous, bearly anybody even uses that crap at home. I bet
microsoft doesnt even do that!

Here's what you do if that is your profession, you keep up to date, you read
web pages and blogs and white papers, etc...
You actually try to be an expert at what you do like they make us
machinists do.

He should come around on an as needed basis, doing backups, system checks,
speed tests, software tests, etc..
He should know when it's a good time to go and get an update, or to stay
clear of one. have emergency backups..YAH! Emergency backups, the damn maint
dept does for the air compressor? WTF?

I need a new mouse? Why do I have to tell him? It's only 20 computers or
less?
So, after a while I will buy my own mouse, becuase that's how it is with
people who do IT work for a living.

But with us...NOW...yes sir!
Them....NOW...i dont feel like it, *** off. Go buy your own mouse.

no im not pissed, its just that there's now a punch mark in my desk.
