I'm sorry you took my opinion, of some teacher's technique of

students, so personal. It wasn't meant as a reflection on what you
learned.
It wasn't a trick, it was a lesson, pay attention. IMO your reading
way too much into it Bob. It was not a lie or a trick. It didn't have
anything to do with trying to get students to lockstep and not think
for themselves. It is a simple basic lesson that will serve them well
in life, pay attention and in particular pay attention to details.
Tom:
Are there multiple methods of teaching? Of course.
Are student/teacher interactions sometimes complex and varied? Yes.
Are there teachers that are effective using an adversarial technique?
Yes.
Does any ONE method serve ALL students equally well? Of course not.
Should a teacher try to earn the respect & trust of his/her students,
rather than engender an adversarial relationship? In my opinion, yes.
But that's just my own opinion.
Kirk's teacher did something unexpected and unforeseen by the
students. Would ALL students react to that particular method
positively? Probably not or we wouldn't be having this conversation.
IMO, Kirk's teacher set the tone for his class by his first "test".
One perspective is that it keeps the students on their toes and
attentive. Another perspective is that it undermines the trust,
respect, and rapport that many students like/need to feel comfortable
with (and do well), in a learning environment.
What also strikes me as interesting about this particular issue, is the
degree to which it has polarized some of the regulars... over a subject
so innocuous as 9th grade teaching methods.
I think this "stunt" has proved mildly divisive here because it is mixing
apples with oranges:
the ultimate educational purpose of teaching skill and how to think, vs.
discipline/habits. Two different things.
It's almost like signing up for an aerobics class, and then being thrown
into a pool. Yeah, swimming is aerobic, but you forgot to tell me to bring
my swimsuit!
Or taking Tai-chi, and then getting kicked in the head with a flying knee.
The lesson here: should one be prepared for all contingencies? Gimme a
break...
I also take back what I said about flattening the instructor's tires.
It seems like it was a well-intentioned lesson, and not malicious, albeit a
mis-placed lesson.
I was knee-jerk reacting to a lot of stuff that I went through that was
indeed malicious, from near-psychopathic individuals who should have been
registered on some kind of FBI list, never mind being allowed proximity to
students.
Had the instructor done this stunt in a military training or survival
class, or safety class, or even an SAT-prep class I could see it, but not
out of the blue in an academic class.
I agree with bottle, that it probably did undermine a few things. Being
primed to second-guess yourself, a sort of mild paranoia about "did I miss
an instruction???" is not, imo, consistent with the exploration-mode of
learning.
Reminds me of Robert DeNiro/Ben Stiller in Meet the Parents.
How would you like DeNiro as an in-law??
